San Diego Padres vs Kansas City Royals

On a sunny afternoon in San Diego, the Padres hosted the Kansas City Royals at Petco Park. Both teams were looking to build momentum early in the season and secure a victory in this inter league match up.

The Padres took the field with right-harden Chris Paddock on the mound, while the Royals countered with lefty Danny Duffy. The game got off to a quiet start as both pitchers were able to work out of early jams and keep the opposing offenses at bay.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Padres were able to break through. Lea doff hitter Trent Grisham drew a walk and advanced to third on a double by Tommy Pham. With runners on second and third, Eric Hosmer hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Grisham and giving the Padres a 1-0 lead.

The Royals answered back in the top of the fourth inning. Carlos Santana led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Salvador Perez. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Jorge Soler hit a line drive to right field, scoring Santana and tying the game at 1-1.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Padres were able to mount a rally. With two outs and runners on second and third, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a sharp ground ball to third base. Royals third baseman Hunter Dozier made a diving stop but was unable to make the throw, allowing both runners to score and giving the Padres a 3-1 lead.

The Royals were not ready to go down without a fight, however, as they mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh inning. With one out and runners on first and second, Ryan O'Hearn hit a double to right field, scoring one run and cutting the Padres lead to 3-2. The Royals then loaded the bases with two outs, but Paddack was able to induce a ground ball to escape the inning with the lead intact.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Padres added some insurance runs. With two outs and the bases loaded, Hosmer hit a line drive to center field, scoring two runs and extending the Padres lead to 5-2.

The Royals were unable to mount a comeback in the final innings, as the Padres bullpen was able to shut them down and secure the victory. Paddack earned the win, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six. Duffy took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits in six innings of work.

Offensively, the Padres were led by Hosmer, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Tatis Jr. also had a strong showing, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. For the Royals, O'Hearn went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Overall, it was a well-played game by both teams, with the Padres ultimately coming out on top. The win improved their record to 5-2 on the season, while the Royals dropped to 3-4. The two teams will meet again for the second game of the series tomorrow night at Petco Park.
